Welcome to Cushioned.uk – Comfort for the Ultimate Challenge
Cushioned.uk was founded by serial adventurer David Murray, with one goal in mind: to make ocean rowing more comfortable – one seat at a time.
Why Cushioned.uk?
In 2021/22, I was one half of The Entrepreneur Ship, rowing across the Atlantic with Guy Rigby in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge/Worlds Toughest Row. During our intense preparation, two major concerns stood out: seasickness and seating comfort.
We spoke to dozens of teams, and one issue kept coming up again and again – sore backsides. It might sound trivial, but in the brutal world of ocean rowing, poor seating choice can mean the difference between finishing the row in comfort or wishing you never started.
As I dug deeper, looking and trying all options, one name kept surfacing – hailed as the “Rolls Royce” of ocean rowing seats: Ventisit.

I eventually tracked down this mythical seat to a fantastic company in the Netherlands, run by the ever-charismatic Bart. His company specialises in high-performance ventilated cushions for people who spend long hours sitting – from wheelchair users to recumbent cyclists, kayakers, and rowers.

About David Murray
David’s journey started with a simple ‘couch to marathon’ challenge over a decade ago – and hasn’t stopped since.
He has completed:
• Over 20 marathons
• 8 ultra-marathons, including the iconic Marathon des Sables
• 7 full Ironmans, ranking in the top 5% in his age group
• The JOGLE – cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End
• And in 2021, he rowed across the Atlantic with Guy Rigby in just over 53 days, becoming the oldest pair to row any ocean
